Late FG Pushes Red Ravens Over #4 Garden City 26-24
Garden City, Kan. - The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football team defeated #4 Garden City on a time-expiring 19-yard field goal by Red Raven freshman kicker Aidan Burgess to give Coffeyville a 26-24 victory. With the victory, Coffeyville moves its overall record to 1-1, including a 1-0 mark in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) contests.
The game started with the Broncbusters Garden City striking first, as Cenard Bennett caught a 20-yard pass from DaeOnte' Mitchell early in the first quarter, putting the Broncbusters ahead 7-0. However, Coffeyville responded swiftly, orchestrating an impressive 13-play, 80-yard drive capped by Red Raven red-shirt freshman tight end Ryley Zalusky's 14-yard touchdown reception from Coffeyville's quarterback Mac Armstrong, tying the game at 7-7.
Garden City pushed ahead again in the second quarter with Mitchell rushing in for a 1-yard touchdown, extending their lead to 14-7. The Broncbusters continued their offensive momentum with a 33-yard field goal by Lucca Alcaraz Valens, making it 17-7 at halftime.
The Red Ravens took control in the third quarter, driving 75 yards in 12 plays, capped by an 8-yard pass to sophomore receiver Kris Thomas and then coming right back with a 23-yard scoring pass to sophomore Anthony Johnson, giving Coffeyville a 21-17 lead.
With 5:30 to go in the fourth quarter, the Red Rven defense then stepped up, forcing a safety to push the margin to 23-17.
However, the Broncbusters answered with 1:13 left in the game, Garden City connected on a 41-yard reception from Jaydyn Sisk to Cenard Bennett, retaking the lead at 24-23.
However, Coffeyville got the ball back with 63 seconds remaining and went 9 plays and 46 yards with Red Raven kicker Aidan Burgess hitting the game-winning 19-yard field goal as time expired to give Coffeyville the 26-24 victory over #4-NJCCC ranked Garden City.
Statistically, the game was split with Coffeyville gaining 424 yards of offense to Garden City's 436. Coffeyville did run more plays (70 to Garden City's 59) and won the time of possession (33 minutes to 26 minutes).
Coffeyville's red-shirt freshman quarterback Mac Armstrong went 18-35 in the game for 261 yards and 3 touchdowns in the winning effort.
Next up for Coffeyville is a KJCCC showdown as the Butler Grizzlies come into Veteran Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 27th. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
