#10 Red Ravens Fall to #2 Iowa Western 35-24
Coffeyville, Kan. - The #10 ranked Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football Team tried to defeat their third-ranked opponent in as many weeks, but were not able to pull off the trifecta and fell at home to the #2 Reivers of Iowa Western 35-24. With the loss, Coffeyville's overall record evens out at 2-2 on the season.
The game started promisingly for the Red Ravens, with Aidan Burgess connecting on a 24-yard field goal to give Coffeyville an early 3-0 lead.
Coffeyville's defense held strong in the first quarter; however, Iowa Western responded in the second quarter, capitalizing on a 75-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass from Malachi Marshall to DeAndre Horn. Special teams then made a big impact in the game with the Reivers' Tony Busch returning a punt 20 yards for a touchdown, pushing the Reivers ahead 14-3. Coffeyville fumbled the ensuing kickoff with the Reivers recovering it, and Iowa Western tacked on another touchdown late in the second quarter, to take the 21-3 halftime lead.
The Red Ravens' offense came out after halftime with some fight in them as Raven quarterback Mac Armstrong led an impressive 85-yard drive, culminating in a 4-yard touchdown run by Armstrong himself, cutting the deficit to 21-10. After a successful onside kick, Armstrong found Tyler Jackson on a 33-yard pass, narrowing the gap to 21-17.
Iowa Western was quick to answer the Ravens' score as the Reivers answered on a 2-yard pass from Marshall to Washington, making it 28-17. The Reivers continued to control the game, and a methodical 11-play, 39-yard drive in the fourth quarter resulted in another touchdown, putting Iowa Western ahead 35-17.
Coffeyville fought back with a 29-yard pass from Mac Armstrong to Tyler Jackson, who made an outstanding catch, bringing the Ravens within 35-24 with 2:00 remaining in the game. However, Iowa Western was able to run out the clock to secure the 35-24 victory over Coffeyville.
Statistically, Coffeyville showed some strength, outgaining Iowa Western in total yards (301 to 294) and maintaining possession slightly longer (30:33 to 29:27). Coffeyville's passing game was productive, with Mac Armstrong throwing for 288 yards and two touchdowns, while Tyler Jackson added 5 receptions, 78 yards, and two scores. However, turnovers, along with 13 penalties (for 117 yards), hampered the Ravens' ability to sustain drives.
Coffeyville will return to action on Saturday, October 11th, with a road game against the Highland Scotties. Kickoff scheduled in Highland, Kansas, for 1:00 p.m.
