Ravens Hit Game Winner to Stun Seward County
Coffeyville, Kan. - The Coffeyville Community College Red Raven men's basketball team was able to overcome a late deficit and key injuries, defeating the Seward County Saints 73-71 at Nellis Hall.
The Ravens started off strong with five made 3-pointers in the game's first eight minutes, building an early lead. Seward County would respond and tie the game at halftime, before leading by as much as nine in the second half.
Coffeyville struggled with turnovers, committing 23 giveaways agaisnt a Saints defense that primarily played a press man, which the Ravens have had inconsistency with this season. CCC would shoot the ball at one of their best clips of the season, finishing 48% from the field, 48% from 3-point range, and 79% at the free throw line.
Jack Sorrell and Daniel Ntambwe both missed the game due to injury. Starting in their absence, freshman Jeremiah Lucas had a career-high 21 points, on 7-12 shooting, including 5-6 from beyond the arc. Rashid Kuta led the team offensively, finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds, including a 10-11 night at the free throw line.
Konstantin Popovic proved to be the hero for Coffeyville, hitting the game-winning shot with 1.2 seconds remaining, a contested left wing 3-pointer to give the Ravens a narrow win. The win snaps a two game skid for Coffeyville, and keeps the team in the Top 6 in the conference standings.
CCC is 14-7 on the season, and currently in sixth place, holding a tiebreaker over Garden City and Barton, and a half game behind Cowley. The Ravens travel to Great Bend to play the Barton Cougars Saturday afternoon.
