#24 Red Ravens Wallop the Pirates 62-29, Earn First KJCCC Victory
Coffeyville, Kan. - The #24 NJCAA-ranked Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Women's Basketball Team looked to get back into the win column after suffering its first loss of the season earlier in the week against Butler. Well, welcome in the Pirates of Independence, and the Ravens took out their frustration with a 62-29 drubbing of the Pirates. The game saw Coffeyville dominating on both ends of the floor, establishing an early lead and maintaining it throughout the four quarters. With the victory, Coffeyville improves its overall season record to 7-1, including a 1-1 record in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference games.
Coffeyville came out strong, outscoring Independence 16-6 in the first quarter and extended their advantage with a 21-6 second-quarter run, taking a 37-12 halftime lead. The Ravens showcased balanced scoring, with standout performances from sophomore Aubrey Hishaw, who led all scorers with 18 points along with 16 rebounds (!), and freshman Esme Smith, contributing 9 points and 11 rebounds. With a 50-19 lead after the third quarter, Coffeyville was able to give a good chunk of playing time to its bench and reserve players in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, Coffeyville was relentless, forcing turnovers (23) and aggressively rebounding (Coffeyville 58, Independence 36), which limited Independence's offensive opportunities. The Pirates struggled to find rhythm, shooting only 18.4% from the field and 42.3% on free throws, to Coffeyville's 30% shooting and 64% on free throws.
Coffeyville rolls into the Thanksgiving Break with a road game scheduled at the Seward Saints on Tuesday, November 25th. Tipoff in Liberal, Kansas, is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
